OSTEOPETROSIS COMPLICATED BY OSTEOMYELITIS OF THE MAXILLA AND ZYGOMA

Abstract
Osteopetrosis is a rare metabolic bone disease caused by a congenital defect in the development or function of the osteoclasts resulting in generalized osteosklerosis. Osteomyelitis is a recognized complication. In the patients, prevention of dental infections and maxillofacial malformation can be difficult. The most locations of osteomyelitis in the face region have been in the mandible and/or maxilla. This report presents a case with malign osteopetrosis in a 10-year-old female, which was complicated by the development of osteomyelitis in the maxilla and zygoma. The osteomyelitis in the maxilla and zygoma were refractory to parsial resection and antibiotic therapy. The clinical symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of this case with malign osteopetrosis are discussed with a literature review.

Özet
Osteopetrozis, osteoklastların gelişim veya fonksiyonundaki kongenital bozukluğa bağlı oluşan, yaygın kemik sklerozu ile karakterize nadir görülen metabolik bir kemik hastalıktır. Osteomiyelit iyi bilinen bir komplikasyonudur. Bu hastalarda, diş enfeksiyonları ve maksillofasial bozuklukların engellenmesi zor bir durumdur. Yüz bölgesindeki osteomiyelitin en sık görüldüğü yer maksilla ve/veya mandibuladır. Bu yazıda, maksilla ve zigomasında osteomiyelit koplikasyonu olan 10 yaşındaki malign osteopetrozisli bayan hasta sunulmuştur. Maksilla ve zigomadaki osteomiyelit parsiyel rezeksiyona ve antibiyotik tedavisine dirençliydi. Malign osteopetrozisli bu vakanın klinik semptomları, tanısı ve tedavisi literatür taraması ile tartışılmıştır.
